The Many Types of Fencing to Choose From

If you need fencing, then you have a lot of choices in front of you. Although there are some very common types of fencing that you probably see every day on your work commute, they are definitely not the end of the fencing options that are available. In order to give you the information you need to choose the right type of fencing, let’s take a look at eight of the most popular types and what they are used for.

Wood fence

We may as well start with the most popular type of fencing out there – especially in the United States. Wood fencing is used for several reasons. First, it is easy to construct wooden fences, even if you do it yourself; second, wood fencing is relatively cheap, although not the least expensive option on this list; and three, wood fencing is both functional and aesthetically pleasing at the same time.

Aluminum fence

Aluminum fencing is one of the least expensive and most basic types of fencing out there. This is definitely not the most secure option, but it doesn’t require much maintenance and has the ability to mimic many other types of fencing. If you are building a fence for serious home security or live in an area with severe weather then another fence type may be more appropriate.

PVC fence

The cheapest of all fencing materials is PVC. PVC is actually pretty great because stakes and pickets that are built out of this material are pretty strong, and can stand up to a lot. PVC fences aren’t as sturdy as ones made from other materials, which is why this fence type is often combined with another material, such as fitting a PVC exterior over wooden fence posts.

Wrought-Iron fence

Wrought-iron fences are extremely strong, but one of the main reasons that they are often chosen is for their beauty. If you see a beautiful, ornate fence decorating an expensive property, then the odds are pretty good that it is made from wrought-iron. The maintenance on a wrought-iron fence is higher than other materials, but the benefits often pay off.

Vinyl fence

Vinyl fencing can be a little costly when compared to other fencing materials, but it has the major advantage of being both strong and flexible at the same time. For example, HomeAdvisor says that vinyl fences are around four times stronger and more flexible than wooden fences of the same design. Vinyl fencing can also be quite beautiful and they are virtually maintenance free.

Chain-Link fence

Chain-link fences are quite popular, and you have probably seen them a dozen times or more just on a short drive through town. That’s because chain-link fences usually surround schoolyards, industrial businesses and lots of residential backyards. Chain link fences do nothing for privacy, but they can be a major deterrent to keeping someone from getting in.

Electrified fence

Electrified fences are generally found with two specific applications: Heavy-duty electrified fences to keep people out of high-security commercial and government facilities and “invisible” fences which keep pets in the yard. Electric fencing is expensive, but it is one of the highest security fence types out there.

Bamboo fence

Finally, another option you may want to consider is bamboo fencing. Bamboo fencing is becoming more and more popular these days, due to its more natural look and the fact that it can be grown naturally without added manufacturing processes. Bamboo fences are nice-looking and very green, but they are also fairly expensive. Bamboo fencing comes in three different styles including live bamboo, rolled bamboo and bamboo cane. All three types can make for extremely attractive fencing.
